Flooding in Southeast Texas affects Renal Center of Orange & displaces patients

Mar 25, 2016

Toledo-Bend-Reservoie-releasing-floodwaters_story.jpg"Rain, rain, go away.  Come again another day."  More than a kids nursery rhyme, it was the mantra in Southeast Texas where they received as much as 20 inches of rain the second weekend of March.  As a result, floodwaters inundated the town of Orange, TX and surrounding communities.  However, the Renal Center of Orange is situated on high ground and stayed open even though over 50% of their patients evacuated.

The rain started in Louisiana on March 9 and headed west into Texas leaving flooded towns in its wake.  After more than 18 inches of rain filled the Toledo Bend Reservoir, officials lowered the dam's gates on Friday, March 11 to let the water flow south along the Sabine River.

Orange-TX-flooding---photo-via-BeaumontEnterprise.com_story.jpgAs a result, Orange County communities were flooded and received anywhere from four to seven feet of water.  The Renal Center of Orange stayed open despite most of their patients evacuating to seek dialysis elsewhere, such as the city of Beaumont 30 miles west.  The renal center was never damaged by the floodwaters.

"When the water ran downstream and started to flood Orange and Newton County, our patients evacuated their homes and went to shelters, hotels, and family.  However, some patients stayed and kept dialyzing at our facility," said Area Coordinator Pam Williams.

To help the community cope with this disaster, Williams coordinated RVM's donations to the region.

"Renal Ventures donated funds and Williams purchased water, bug spray, granola bars, baby items, and Gatorade to donate to local shelters.  She is a lifelong resident of Orange, Texas and cares a great deal for the people there," said Director of Human Resources Alison Bodor.

Renal-Center-of-Orange---exterior_story.jpgAs the waters begin to recede and the community begins to rebuild, Williams appreciates the hard work of her staff and their dedication to RVM patients.

"The staff at Orange is amazing and they are committed to having the renal center open for our patients.  They truly are the RV Difference!" said Williams.
