Class participants pass a kidney stone and learn

Nov 18, 2015

Clinical Educator P. Dianne McGinnis had an idea.  Outside her classroom at North Denton, the sun was shining and she wanted to take her New Hire (Inexperienced) class of six outdoors to enjoy it.  Next on the syllabus was renal anatomy, and thus was born the game "Pass that Stone."

Pass-the-Stone-education_03_story.jpg"I came up with this [game] on the fly to take advantage of the beautiful weather we were having in Texas," said McGinnis.

She divided the class into two teams.  Using sidewalk chalk, one team drew a nephron and labeled the components.  The other team drew the urinary tract with a kidney (including ureter), bladder, and urethra. Each part of the anatomy was a space on their "game board."  Teams picked a rock from the parking lot to use as their game piece, aka, a kidney stone.

The teams then took turns answering questions covering topics not only about anatomy, but also any previous class materials. "I made the questions progressively harder as they moved through the nephron or urinary tract," said McGinnis.  Answering correctly moved them forward and answering incorrectly moved them back.  Whichever team made it out the urethra  first won the game.

Pass-the-Stone-education_05_story.jpgClass participants included Mountain Home PCT Tiffany Looney, North Texas Acute RN Julia Herrera, Storm Lake PCT Diana Salmeron, Fort Dodge RN Alison Searcy, Fort Dodge PCT Heather Pittman, and Lewisville LVN Shannon Seymore.

Thanks for being the RV Difference, Diane McGinnis!
