RVMers hone their skills and brains as they head back to school

Sep 02, 2015

back-to-school_story.jpgSchool is back in session.  And these RVM students are at the head of the class as they pursue additional education to complete bachelor degrees.

Taking advantage of the RVM educational assistance program to reimburse costs associated with higher education, Director of Marketing Kim Travis, Mountain Home Clinic Coordinator Glenda Salmon, and Brick Clinic Coordinator Edna Delorenzo recently began taking online classes.  Here is their story.

What school are you attending and how long has it been since you've taken classes?

Travis: I'm taking classes through the Colorado State University Global campus and am getting my Bachelor's in Organizational Leadership.  It has been over 20 years since I've taken classes.

Salmon: I am taking an online class through Chamberlain College of Nursing to finish my Bachelor's in Nursing.  I took my last class in 2005 before coming to work for RVM.

Delorenzo: I'm also working towards my Bachelor's in Nursing through Chamberlain College and it has been 14 years since I've been in a classroom, virtual or otherwise.

How far along are you in your program and what goals are you hoping to accomplish?

Delorenzo: I have six classes remaining and plan to complete them in the 2016-17 school year.  My main goals are professional and personal growth.  RVM's Impact Leadership program was a great inspiration to take higher education classes.

Travis: I am about 90% complete with my classes, so I'm almost there.  I plan to graduate at the end of 2015 or the beginning of 2016.  I felt like having my degree is essential in today's job market.

Salmon: I am just completing my first class with them and have about 1 week left!  I would love to complete my BSN and then my Masters before I retire.

How is this educational experience different than previous post-secondary education?

Salmon: This is the first time I've taken classes online and wasn’t in a classroom setting. I'm enjoying the interaction with my professor and classmates.

Delorenzo: The work load requires time management and commitment on my part. The classes can be challenging at times and some weeks you have to juggle your life around to get things done.

Travis: I am much more determined and focused this time around.  Plus, my kids are older so it was a good time.  Also, RVM’s tuition assistance program really took away any excuse that I had.

Any last thoughts on becoming a student again and furthering your education?

Travis: Online education was intimidating at first, but once you develop a routine it is quite manageable.

Salmon: I love to learn and even though it is the first time I've taken online classes, it has been a great experience!  I also appreciate RVM's educational assistance program as this is the first time I've used it and it has been valuable.

Delorenzo: Getting my Bachelor's is very important to me and I know the hard work will be worth it in the end.
