RVMers follow American dream & become citizens: Nanje Lobe

Sep 18, 2015

Citizenship_Nanje_story.jpgEach year, on September 17, Americans celebrate Constitution Day and Citizenship Day and we recognize those people who become U.S. citizens.  Two employees at Texas Renal Ventures in Fort Worth and one at Plano became U.S. citizens this year.  Let's learn about their journey to citizenship.

Nanje Lobe, the Clinic Coordinator, grew up in the British Cameroons, a British Mandate territory that was in West Africa.  In 2004, Lobe started his world travelling earning degrees and stamps on his passport.  He went to Stockholm, Germany to earn his Masters, Singapore for a Doctorate, then back to Europe living in Stockholm, London, the British Cameroons, then to the United States.

"After travelling the world and seeing how U.S. citizens are honored, especially in Europe, you see all these people who are hungry to come to this country.  I think the U.S. is the greatest country in the world," said Lobe.

Nanje-Lobe_story.jpgThe moment Lobe definitely wanted to move and become a U.S. citizen was early 2007 after his wife had a miscarriage.  "That was my saddest day and really traumatic.  I made up my mind to come to the U.S. and not live in Stockholm anymore," said Lobe.

Lobe arrived in Washington D.C. and lived in Virginia, San Francisco, Dodge City and Wichita in Kansas, and finally landed where he currently lives in Fort Worth, Texas.

Lobe started the "long and tedious process" to apply to be a U.S. citizen.  There was paperwork, fingerprinting, and civics materials to study in anticipation of a test and interview.  Lobe took the test in April 2015 and learned that he passed a couple of months later.  "I had an oath-taking ceremony at the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) with over 100 people.  It was a dream come true since this was something I've wanted since I was 7 years old," Lobe said.

Lobe's goal is to gain more experience in the U.S. as a citizen, learn more about the country, and perhaps represent the U.S. in some sort of unofficial diplomatic way, spreading the word about the "greatest country in the world."
