RVMers follow American dream & become citizens: Hyun Joo Kim

Sep 22, 2015

Citizenship_Kim_story.jpgEach year, on September 17, Americans celebrate Constitution Day and Citizenship Day and we recognize those people who become U.S. citizens.  Two employees at Texas Renal Ventures in Fort Worth and one at Plano became U.S. citizens this year.  Let's learn about their journey to citizenship.

Becoming a U.S. citizen was an interesting trip for Plano Clinic Coordinator Hyun Joo Kim, as she grew up in South Korea, moved to New Zealand, then to San Antonio, TX, and now works in Plano.  After working here with her green card for five years, Kim became a U.S. citizen in June.

For her first 28 years, Kim lived in South Korea and worked as an English teacher.  However, after her husband was transferred to New Zealand for work, she initially continued to work as a teacher at a secondary school, but realized that teaching English in New Zealand was a different ballgame.  "I cannot teach native speakers English, so I looked into what else I could be," said Kim, who then became a nurse.

Hyun-Joo-Kim-01_story.jpg"My sister invited me to live in San Antonio in 2003 when I was in college.  But I took 13 years to make it here," said Kim.  Kim transferred her nursing certification from New Zealand to the United States and worked as a nurse in the Lone Star state.

"After living here for a few years, we thought we would move back to New Zealand, since it was so wonderful.  But my kids didn't want to move back, so we stayed here and I started the process to become a citizen," Kim said.  Having lived here for almost 5 years, which is the mandatory amount of time one would have to live in the U.S. before becoming eligible to apply for citizenship, Kim started the long process.

The application process consisted of fingerprints, taking a photo, a 30-page application, a civics test, and many questions during an interview.  Kim successfully completed the gauntlet of the citizenship application process and both her and her kids became citizens in June 2015.

"Now that I'm a citizen, I'm excited that my family won't have to wait in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection line when returning from international trips," said Kim.
