Morristown starts offering clinical apheresis services

Aug 12, 2015

Morristown-Apheresis_01_story.jpgOn August 1, the Renal Center of Morristown started offering a new service to its New Jersey patients:  therapeutic (clinical) apheresis.

Apheresis, derived from Greek word "aphairesis" meaning "a taking away," is a technique in which whole blood is taken from the body, sections are segregated with some removed, and the remaining fluid is returned to your body.

During apheresis, an intravenous catheter is inserted into a patient and then connected to a spinning centrifuge bowl.   Whole blood is then drawn into the centrifuge.  The more dense elements, such as red blood cells, settle to the bottom with less dense elements such as white blood cells, platelets, and plasma rising to the top.

centrifugal-separation_story.jpgMorristown, under the leadership of Medical Director Dr. Shubho Sarkar, will be offering plasmapheresis.  This form of apheresis is a treatment for several hematologic and neurologic conditions, such as Serum Hyperviscosity Syndrome and Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura/Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome (TTP/HUS).

Morristown-Apheresis_03_story.jpgSenior Divisional Director Tim Weaver says, "We have been working for several months with Morristown Medical Center regarding this procedure and are excited to start offering it.  Morristown will focus on therapeutic plasmapheresis.  More than 300 of this type of apheresis procedures are done every year and has been growing annually in the double digits."

Morristown has been working with its manufacturer and training staff for the past two months learning how to administer apheresis.  Nurses at the center are now trained in both dialysis and apheresis.

During their first week of offering the service,  five patients have had successful treatments.  Morristown will continue to inform the community and patients about this new service while showing all patients the RV Difference that sets Renal Ventures Management apart.
