Bowles still going strong after 40 years as nurse

Aug 28, 2015

Acute RN Mary Bowles has been a nurse longer than some of us at RVM have been alive.  Bowles recently celebrated 40 years as a nurse with her fellow acute nurses in the North Texas Acute program.  Here is her story in her own words.

Mary-Bowles---40-years_story.jpgMy mother always wanted to be a nurse, but never had the opportunity.  I think she influenced me a lot.  I have always enjoyed helping others, so nursing seemed a natural choice for me

I graduated nursing school in 1975.  I went to work at St. Paul, which is a teaching hospital in Dallas, Texas.  I started in the cardiovascular intensive care unit and worked there for eight years.  In the same hospital, I transferred to Interventional Radiology and worked there for five years.

One of my friends was the head nurse in the dialysis unit and talked me into coming to dialysis.  I began my career in dialysis in 1989 at St Paul and stayed there until 2001.  I went to work for Fresenius Acutes and, shortly after starting, became the acute manager in Ft Worth, Texas.  In 2005, I decided to work closer to home.  A friend talked me into coming to Renal Ventures, where I am now an acute staff nurse.

I remember one day when I received a very sick patient in the hemodialysis room.  During the course of the dialysis treatment, he began to deteriorate.  I  recognized the patient needed to transfer to ICU.  I discussed the situation with the ICU charge nurse.  We called a registered respiratory therapist and avoided a code.  Dialysis nurses are often thought of as only knowing dialysis.  However, after this case, I gained the respect of the ICU nurses, which improved our working relationship.

Being able to make a difference for someone inspires me.  It is a challenge to manage a really sick patient and see them improve.

I plan to continue working with the RVM North Texas Acute program, but perhaps slowing down just a little.  I hope to become more involved in church and community activities.
