RVM receptionist conquers brain tumor, promotes awareness

Michel-Richard-meningioma.jpgIn May 2011, Receptionist Michel Richard for the Nederland and Orange clinics was driving and her left eye started to feel "itchy."  Annoyed and starting to lose some vision, but not thinking it was too serious, she visited her optometrist.  When she wasn't able to read the large capital "E" at the top of the eye chart, she knew something was wrong.  She eventually received the diagnosis of a meningioma, a benign brain or spinal cord tumor.  However, it was pushing dangerously on her optic nerve.

A month later, Richard was on the operating table in Houston to have the tumor removed.  "I stayed strong for my family throughout the process, but that day I broke down," said Richard.  The stress is understandable due to the side effects of the tumor pushing on her left eye's optic nerve, the chance of losing her vision completely, and the radiation treatments Richard had to endure.

The surgery was a success and Richard has almost all of her vision back today.  "I lost some peripheral vision in my right eye so my coworkers like to mess with me and approach me on that side," commented Richard.

Today, Richard celebrates her life with her fiancé and two children.  She spreads awareness of this disease during Brain Tumor/Cancer Awareness Month in May.

Her message regarding brain cancer is "Don't take it lightly."  To promote awareness of the disease and its awareness this month, Richard passed out gray ribbons at her facilities and the home office.
