Passaic patient redesigns flag, sends to President Obama

Mar 06, 2015

Samuel-Kapral-flag-redesign_story_02.jpgRVM patients are creative people.  Though they may be on dialysis, their creative juices keep flowing.  That is the case for patient Sam Kapral at Passaic who has designed packaging for products such as fragrances, creams and product art for Gold Medal biscuit mix.  Kapral recently brought his creative design eye to a symbol that has remained unchanged since 1960…the American flag.

Seeking to balance the horizontal red and white stripes, which represent the original 13 colonies, with the field of white stars on a blue background, which represents the 50 states in the union, Kapral redesigned the flag so the blue rectangle extends all the way down to the bottom and the stars are enlarged.

Over time, he has rearranged the stars into various configurations, until he found the staggered pattern he desired. Beside the panel of blue and white, the red and white stripes alternate uniformly as before, but now each of the stripes is equal in length.

Samuel-Kapral-flag-redesign_story_01.jpgHis explanation is simple: the current American flag places too much emphasis on the original 13 colonies, represented by the 13 red and white stripes. There is not enough emphasis on the individual states as stars. "We should be proud of our states and show them all," Kapral remarks. His final design shows the stars enlarged, to display more prominently against their blue backdrop.

Kapral said he understands the "sentimental value" the flag holds, but points out it has changed throughout its history as the United States has added more states.

Kapral sent his redesigned flag to President Barack Obama with a letter explaining, "When the flag is placed over a veteran's casket, the stars appear on one side only.  In my redesign, the stars and stripes appear on both sides as well as the top."

Read more about Kapral's graphic design background and the aesthetic philosophy behind the redesign of "The Star-Spangled Banner"
