Internship program gives employees experience & potential to stay

Feb 11, 2015

What do Steve Jobs, Brian Williams, Mary-Kate Olsen, Steven Spielberg and Seth Meyers have in common?  They all cut their teeth as interns before becoming successful in their industries.  At Renal Ventures Management, our internship program started in 2009 when RVM founder Ellen Davis hired a construction management intern from the University of Oregon to help out with facilities while she was traveling.  Approximately 20 employees have interned at RVM since the start of the program.  Here are some current and former interns' stories.

Getting involved in the internship program

Interns-at-RVM_story.jpgAlison Bodor, Talent & Development Manager: "Initially, we were approached by Kaplan University who had billing students who were earning a certificate.  They needed to do an internship with a company for four weeks on-site getting real world practice.  [Director of Revenue] Tracy Moore agreed for the Accounts Receivable department to be a location.  [AR manager] Karri Clay also recommended that we get involved with Red Rocks Community College (RRCC)."

Jennifer Wake, Accounts Receivable Specialist: "I found out about the internship opportunity at RVM through RRCC. I needed to complete an internship in order to get my Billing/Coding Certificate and RVM was one of the open internship sites."

Evan Stratton, Recruiting Coordinator: "I saw the internship advertised on Craigslist. I am pursuing my degree in HR Management and was looking for a position where I could gain some experience in this field."

Nadia Khamis, Marketing Specialist: "I was working at a tennis club in Lakewood where Ellen Davis was a member. Ellen asked me what I was studying, I told her Marketing and that I was looking for an internship. She said her Director of Marketing could use some help, and I started the job about 2 weeks after that."

Conrad Cordova, Clinical Operations Project Manager: "I was hired as an Accounts Receivable Intern.  Tracy Moore and Karri Clay are aware of the RRCC course requirements and created an internship experience that exposed me to a general understanding of the AR tasks and responsibilities."

The experience

Shannon Hartman, Accounts Receivable Intern: "Currently, I am filling the position of an AR specialist in the collections department, specifically BCBS and Aetna. Previously, I received training in all positions within the AR department. RRCC requires that I complete a checklist of skills, ranging from collections to payment posting, so that is where the majority of my time went at the beginning of my internship. "

Lorelei Stratford, Accounts Receivable Specialist: " My first impression when I interviewed with Karri Clay  was that the front desk area was clean, very professional, and the interior design was very pleasing. I was still working at my job at a warehouse (I had been working in various types of warehouse jobs and distribution centers for past 6 years) and for me it was quite a change from seeing boxes, dust, and dirt, to a very clean and quiet office environment."

Brienne Jepkema, Social Media & Digital Content Intern: "My first day here I felt like a fish out of water. I’ve never worked in an office and was quite nervous about learning the ropes. However, after the first week I was already starting to feel comfortable and quickly learned about the company culture."
